HISTORY
The word 'Phlegraean' originates from the ancient Greek "phlégō," meaning "I burn". The ancient Greeks, who settled in Cumae in the 8th century B.C., recognized the volcanic nature of the area. They even located the entrance to the underworld near Lake Avernus, a place visited by mythical figures like Ulysses and Aeneas. The volcanic activity not only made the soil fertile but also created numerous hot springs. These natural features enchanted the Romans, who built magnificent imperial villas in Baia, just steps away from Alelula Luxury Homespa, to enjoy periods of "otium," or leisure. Due to bradyseism and other volcanic phenomena, many of these villas now lie a few meters below sea level, making the Phlegraean coastline one of the world's premier sites for underwater archaeology. Alelula Luxury Homespa sits on the same hot springs once favored by prominent Roman emperors, including Nero and Caligula.
Archaeological Park of Cuma
A walk around the acropolis of Cuma. The visit begins with the Antro della Sibilla (Sybil's Cave) at the foot of the hill. It continues by climbing up the rock to the Byzantine Tower with the Belvedere, the Lower Terrace, traditionally called the Temple of Apollo, and the Upper Terrace on the summit of the Cuma Mountain, called the Temple of Jupiter.
Submerged Archaeological Park of Baia
Also referred to as 'The Submerged Pompeii', this underwater archaeological site is unique in the world. A favourite holiday destination for ancient Romans, part of this ancient city has sunk over the years due to bradyseism. You can visit it through a diving centre, either by diving or snorkelling, or comfortably from a glass-bottomed boat.
Roman Baths of Baia
One of the grandest archaeological and architectural complexes in the Mediterranean. It returns to us the luminous image of ancient Baia, a privileged holiday destination in Roman times, a pivotal place of ancient thermalism, a place of refreshment for the body and spirit, handed down in a polyphonic narrative by ancient writers.
Piscina Mirabilis
The Piscina Mirabilis is the largest and most monumental drinking water cistern ever built by the ancient Romans. It had the function of supplying water to the numerous ships belonging to the Classis Misenensis of the Roman navy, once moored in the nearby port of Misenum. The cistern, also known as "the Cathedral of Water" for its size and majesty, is located in ancient Bauli, the name the ancient Romans gave to the present-day town of Bacoli.
Flavian Amphitheater
The Flavian Amphitheatre at Pozzuoli is an outstanding example of Roman architecture, the third largest ever built by the Romans, surpassed only by the Colosseum in Rome and the amphitheatre in ancient Capua. Built in the 1st century AD, it is a splendid example of the prodigious developments achieved by engineering in ancient Rome. It was mainly used for gladiator fights and could seat up to 40,000 spectators.
NATURE
The Phlegraean Fields area is a large, dormant volcanic caldera with a diameter of 15-18 km, bordered by the Posillipo and Camaldoli hills. This region features numerous craters and small volcanoes, totaling at least twenty-four. Some of these still emit gases, such as the Solfatara of Pozzuoli, or exhibit hydrothermal activity, as seen in the thermal baths of Baia and Lucrino. The area is also known for the phenomenon of bradyseism, which is the periodic lowering and raising of the ground level. Bradyseism is the reason many of Baia's Roman villas now lie below sea level. The Campi Flegrei boast significant volcanic deposits, including Campanian Grey Tuff and Yellow Tuff. Additionally, the area features volcanic lakes like Lake Averno and coastal lakes formed by natural dams, such as Lake Lucrino, Lake Fusaro, and Lake Miseno.
Lake Avernus
The name Avernus derives from the Greek word for 'without birds', as it was believed that the lake's waters emitted gases that prevented birds from living nearby. According to Greek and Roman mythology, the lake served as an entrance to the Underworld and was considered the earthly abode of the fallen angel Lucifer. This connection is the reason why the Roman underworld (Greek Hades) is also referred to as Avernus. Additionally, the trees around the lake's shore are thought to represent the dark forest mentioned in Dante's Inferno. The area is ideal for a walk or a jog, offering both historical intrigue and natural beauty.
Lake Fusaro and the Casina Vanvitelliana
The Casina Vanvitelliana is a splendid jewel of late Baroque architecture. It was built in 1782 by the architect Carlo Vanvitelli (1739 - 1821), son of the famous Luigi (the author of the Royal Palace of Caserta) on commission of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon (1751 - 1825), King of the Kingdom of Naples. The residence occupies a small emersion of land within Lake Fusaro and was used as a resting place after the King's hunting and fishing trips. We recommend a visit at sunset.
Misenum Lake
The lake owes its name to Misenus, a trumpeter in the Trojan army who followed Aeneas, as described in Virgil's Aeneid (Book VI). Misenus drowned in the sea waters near the lake, and Aeneas, upon finding his body, buried him under a large mound of earth to provide a worthy burial. This mound became known as the promontory of Cape Misenum, serving as a perpetual memorial to his heroic companion. In Roman times, the lake, along with the Miseno roadstead, formed part of the ancient port of Misenum. The port was composed of two natural basins: the lake was used as a dock for outfitting and repairing ships, while the roadstead served as the main harbor.
Monte Nuovo
The youngest mountain in Europe, Monte Nuovo, was formed between September 29th and October 6th, 1538, following an eruption that devastated the medieval village of Tripergole. To explore this unique geological wonder, we recommend taking the "Descent into the Underworld" trekking route. The journey begins from the slopes of Monte Nuovo, leading you to the summit where you can peer into the crater. Along the way, you'll traverse through a picturesque landscape of pine forests and Mediterranean scrub surrounding the fumaroles (sulfurous fumes) zone. From there, the real adventure begins as you descend into the underworld, passing through an oak wood until you reach the tranquil shores of Lake Avernus.
Solfatara Volcano
The Solfatara of Pozzuoli is a volcano in a dormant state and only manifests secondary volcanic phenomena such as fumaroles, mud volcanoes and, indeed, solfataras. For some years now, it has not been possible to visit its interior. Therefore, we recommend a vantage point from which you can admire it from above.
RELAX
Explore the Campi Flegrei natural thermal baths: waters of well-being, waters of balance. Immersing oneself in these waters gives the skin radiance and softness, thanks to an antiseptic, emollient and moisturising effect. The body immediately receives an articular and muscular benefit. The ideal place to restore psycho-physical balance. In addition to the thermal baths, you can get your fill of sun and sea by relaxing in some of the area's most exclusive beach clubs.
Lido Giardino Beach Resort & Spa
An expanse of sandy beach, equipped with sun loungers and parasols, a children's pool and one with adults-only access, a wonderful wellness centre with sea views, bar and restaurant. This beach is affiliated with Alelula Luxury Homespa and has free parking.

Naples: Historic Centre
The city of Naples is a tapestry woven with more than 27 centuries of history, evident at every turn, in every alleyway, and on every square. Its story began with the Cumanians in the 8th century BC, who christened it after the siren Partenope. Later, the Greeks refashioned it as Neapolis (new city) before 470 B.C., from which the present Naples derives its name. Recognizing its rich heritage, UNESCO designated the center of Naples as a World Heritage Site in 1995. The city has been a pivotal hub for art and architecture since the Middle Ages, as evidenced by its ancient fortresses, opulent palaces like the Royal Palace of the 1600s, and the myriad churches and palazzos commissioned by noble families. From Alelula Luxury Homespa, the historic center of Naples is easily accessible. By car, it's just a 25-minute drive away, or guests can opt for a scenic train journey, departing from the Cumana line station at Lucrino towards Montesanto, which takes approximately 30 minutes.
Pompeii Excavations
The catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD tragically buried the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, freezing it in time and offering future generations a glimpse into its past. The Archaeological Park of Pompeii stands as a testament to this disaster, drawing approximately 4 million visitors annually. Alongside the excavations of Herculaneum and Oplontis, Pompeii's ruins are designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Situated roughly 45 km from Alelula Luxury Homespa, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii invites visitors to explore the remarkably preserved streets, homes, and artifacts of this ancient city, offering a poignant and immersive journey into history.
Herculaneum Excavations
The devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, which engulfed Pompeii, also wrought havoc upon the town of Herculaneum. While Pompeii was buried under 7-8 meters of loose material, allowing for the decomposition of organic matter, Herculaneum faced a different fate. It was submerged under more than 25 meters of material, which upon contact, charred everything in its path. However, as this material cooled, it solidified into rock, preserving elements that would have otherwise decomposed, such as wood and the magnificent papyri found in the eponymous villa. Today, the Herculaneum excavations, along with Pompeii and Oplontis, are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Situated just 30 km from Alelula Luxury Homespa, the Herculaneum Archaeological Park offers visitors a remarkable glimpse into the ancient past, showcasing the remarkably preserved remnants of this once-thriving Roman town.
Sorrento
The charm and fascination of the entire Sorrento Peninsula draw thousands of visitors here every year. The mountains plunging into the crystal-clear water, the breathtaking views, the picturesque old town, the excellent cuisine and the strategic location make this town one of the most popular and dreamed of destinations in Italy. Sorrento is only 65 km from Alelula Luxury Homespa and can be easily reached by car.
Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast, situated along the coast east of the Sorrento Peninsula, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Its protection stems from its extraordinary cultural landscape of exceptional value, showcasing a harmonious relationship between man and nature. The unique topography and historical development have allowed for the preservation of pristine nature alongside human activities. The landscape features typical Mediterranean scrub, woods, rocky areas, and valuable citrus trees and vineyards. The villages along the Amalfi Coast resemble charming cribs suspended above the sea. The Amalfi Coast is approximately 80 km from Alelula Luxury Homespa and can be reached by car. For a day trip, we recommend starting in Positano and ending in Vietri sul Mare, where you can rejoin the motorway. This route offers a stunning drive through some of the most picturesque and culturally rich areas of the coast.
Sentiero degli Dei
The Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) is a stunning 9 km trekking route and, in our opinion, one of the best ways to experience the Amalfi Coast. We recommend parking your car in Bomerano, a hamlet of Agerola. From there, you can start walking towards Nocelle and finally Positano. Once you reach Positano, you can take a ferry to Amalfi, where you will find a bus that will take you back to Bomerano. To fully enjoy the route and explore Positano and Amalfi, we suggest leaving early in the morning.
Capri
It has the charm that envelops all exclusive destinations, embodies the dream of La Dolce Vita and attracts tourists from all over the world, who appreciate its iconic soul amidst alleyways and breathtaking views. Capri can be reached by hydrofoil from Naples in about 50 minutes.
Procida
Located about 3 km from the mainland, Procida enchants travelers with its vibrant palette: the green of its vegetation, the blue of the sea, and the azure of the sky blend harmoniously with the pastel colors of its houses. Procida is easily reached by ferry from Pozzuoli, with a travel time of about 20-30 minutes.
Royal Palace of Caserta
In 1734, the 18-year-old Charles of Bourbon (1716-1788) ascended to the throne of Naples, a kingdom that had regained its independence after more than 200 years. The son of Elisabeth Farnese and Philip V, Charles embodied an enlightened culture, enabling him to initiate significant reforms. On January 20, 1752, in Caserta, the king laid the first stone of a project that would transform the region: the Royal Palace of Caserta. Today, the Royal Palace of Caserta is one of Italy's wonders, often referred to as the 'Italian Versailles.' Located just 45 km from Alelula Luxury Homespa, it is an ideal destination for a cultural day trip.
